Fish Eden: Coarse Fishing

Coarse fishing is available on both rivers and still waters in the Eden area. Chub and Dace populate the rivers and Pike, Perch and Roach are available on the still waters.

Coarse fish are part of the cypronid family and most spawn in spring so the close season runs from the 15th March – 15th June on the rivers. There is no close season on most still waters.

Chub (Leuciscus cephalus)
A long, streamlined body, a rounded head and a large mouth. The anal fin of the chub is convex, distinguishing it from the Dace which has a concave fin. It is a greyish brown colour, tinged with green, and its scales are bordered with grey or black. It's has a grey tail and pinkish fins.

Dace (Leuciscus leuciscus)
A slim, silver-flanked fish, with grey fins. Often mistaken for chub (although the dace has a smaller mouth and concave shaped anal fin) and roach (which have red fins and are plumper).

Pike (Esox lucius)
Sleek bodied with a green and silvery colour and dark striped markings for camouflage. Pike are armed with razor sharp teeth for hunting other fish.

Perch (Perca fluviatilis)
A deep bodied fish which is normally a bright green to olive colour with yellow sides and grey/white bellies. They have bright red fins and bold vertical stripes running down the sides of their bodies. The dorsal fin and gills are covered with sharp spines.

Roach (Rutilus rutilus)
Silvery blue in colour with large scales. Fins are an orange/red colour and there is a red tinge to the eye.
