Kirkby StephenThe historic town of Kirkby Stephen, on the banks of the River Eden in Cumbria, has a wide range of places to eat and fascinating antiques and curio shops. The countryside around the town offers a number of activities including walking, cycling and fishing. Wainwright's famous 'Coast to Coast' walk passes through the town. To the south of the town is the site of Croglam Castle, an example of prehistoric earthworks. The Parish Church of Kirkby Stephen, known locally as the Cathedral of the Dales is built on the site on an Old Saxon church and contains many relics including the eighth century Loki Stone; one of only two such stones in Europe. Nearby, in the Mallerstang Valley, lies the ruins of Pendragon Castle, famed for its connection with King Arthur. Legend has it that Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur, was poisoned in the castle. |
