Once the capital of Cumbria the towns name derives from its situation 'under the red hill'. The local red sandstone makes up most of the buildings in the town centre, giving it a reddish pink hue. The bustling market town has plently of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs and the tourist information centre and museum are ideal starting points for exploring the town. There are opportunities for walking and cycling and plenty of visitor attractions are located close to the town. Fishing is available on the nearby Rivers Eden and Eamont. Nearby are Brougham Castle, Mayburgh Henge and King Arthur's Round Table and the stone circle 'Long Meg and her daughters'. |
